Summer Never Ends At This Hawaiian Spa
/It’s hard to believe that we just enjoyed Labor Day weekend, because it marks the end of summer days…unless you live in Southern California, as I do. But, there is a place where you can go and never have to say goodbye to your favorite season, while getting luxuriously pampered. That place is called the ‘āwili spa and salon at the Andaz Maui at Wailea. Personalization and relaxation are their top goals at this spa.
Upon arrival, I entered an old-fashioned apothecary-style setting, with floor-to-ceiling file cabinets made from the most gorgeous wood. Each drawer contains herbs and various ingredients that are used to mix-and-match into customized oils used for treatments of your choice. This fourteen thousand square foot spa and salon was designed by the Rockwell Group, which also redesigned the entire hotel. While it’s only been open for three years, this award-winning spa has every right to toot its own horn, having been recognized as one of the Top 10 Green Spas for Organic Spa Magazine and Town & Country Magazine who quoted it as “one of the most transformational wellness destinations in the world.”
I opted for the Essential 60-minute massage, which included the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi technique, and when in Hawaii, you must do as the locals do. This treatment consists of long, fluid strokes and hitting up those pressure points to alleviate extra stress. Prior to my treatment, I was treated to a personalized Apothecary Experience where I discussed my likes and dislikes of various oils and essences and how they could better treat my body and mind with one of the spa’s Apothecary Consultants.
Once I checked in and locked my stuff away, I indulged in a luxurious dip in the heated whirlpool to get me super relaxed before my treatment. As I waited for my masseuse to come and collect me, I indulged in lemon-infused water and dried mango in the serene women’s lounge area. Then, I was off to get my much-needed massage. My masseuse was incredible and very kind when I told him I was a wimp and could only handle a mild to medium pressure. I did my best to try and stay awake so I could enjoy every single minute of it, and let me tell you, it was heavenly! Afterwards, I indulged in probably my second or third shower of the day, using all of their organic, natural shampoos and soaps, then spent the rest of the day poolside, soaking in as many island rays as I could.
The ‘āwili spa and salon is your home away from home. The staff and environment are so friendly and so calm, which I find to be important, especially when other spas can often be intimidating. You can tell that they take pride in making sure your experience is top-notch, yet chill. And it works!
