He is Maria Menounous’ Greek Hair God…Meet Celebrity Hair Stylist Dimitris Giannetos

A recent transplant from Greece, Celebrity Hair Stylist Dimitris Giannetos has already taken LA by storm. He currently works closely with fellow Greek client, TV host Maria Menounous, and recently landed jobs with the pop group Fifth Harmony and singer Carly Rae Jepsen for her latest video, “I Really Like You.” As a young kid in Greece, Dimitris always knew that he wanted to be a hair stylist. He even played around with his mother and sister’s hair to try and replicate styles that his mother’s hairdresser would create. When he finally got his start in the industry, he admired Guido Palau (british-born, iconic hair stylist) and continues to find inspiration in his work. We chatted it up with Dimitris to find out how he landed in LA, how he fulfilled his Hollywood dream (ahem – finding an agent!) and what he loves about working with Maria Menounous.

Where did you get your training?
I finished beauty school back in Greece when I was only seventeen. I travelled around the world and did workshops in London which were good training, but there is nothing better than real on the job experiences.  Also, I recommend traveling as much as you can and learn about different cultures and get experiences from different people. My twelve years of exploring the world landed me in Lalaland.

Did you have a mentor as an up-and-coming hair stylist?
My besties in Greece were my mentors for my future. I’ve been always thankful to them for being so supportive.

How and when did you land in LA?
After a gold contract with Loreal Paris in Greece, I did a lot of covers for Vogue, Elle, Harper’s BAZAAR, L’officiel In Style and more magazines – all at the age of twenty-nine. I took a big risk two years ago and started from ground zero to build my career in Los Angeles. I feel blessed that I found my agent, Charly Shahin at Opus Beauty, to make this dream happen.

We’re huge fans of one of your clients, Maria Menounos. Can you describe one of your favorite looks that you’ve created for her?
I feel very lucky to have Maria as a client and friend. She's the most cool and gorgeous client I've ever had! My work on her literally can't describe what I'm able to do because she is naturally soo beautiful.  My favorite look on her was the Dolce Gabanna hairstyle that I did for the Oscars in 2014.

What hair trends do you see coming up for spring and summer?
The trends I see straight from fashion week for spring/summer have women wearing their hair shorter in a long bob. I see a warmer auburn shade replacing the ash cold shades from last season.  Lastly, beach waves are an all-time spring/summer hairstyle. Also, try the half top-knot for a youthful, modern style.

What advice would you give an aspiring hair stylist?
My advice is to always pursue your dreams and to not stop having goals.  Just stay positive and know that you’re going to make things happen.

p.s. Don't forget to smile when you wake up – it really is life changing!
